We were doing some family research and discovered that
my Mother's great-grandfather (my
great-great-grandfather), E.L. Lansdowne, was in company
H and is mentioned in the book several times. We bought
the book for that reason, and I really expected the book
to be kind of hard to read, but I was astonished to
discover that Co Aytch is one of the best books I have
ever read! Sam's writing style is timeless, and he made
me feel as if I were right there with him. I don't know
when I have been so affected by a non-fiction book. It
truly brought history to life for me - the horror as
well as the humorous stories. I am very glad that we
happened upon the book, and it is made even more
personal for us with the family connection.
Thank you,
Marsha

I received the book
yesterday, thank you. This is a gift for my husband.
However, after first glance I think I'll borrow it after
he is done.

Thanks very much for adding Sam’s
personal notes back into this edition. It just adds
that much more of a personal touch, as if we could sit
down and talk with him. Boy, what a treat that would be
! Oh well, I can dream can’t I ?
Your signature also adds a special
connection to Sam’s book. Thanks for taking the time to
inscribe it. My friend has a paperback edition, and I
know this
Christmas present will be well received.
Take care,

One of the
earliest books in my Civil War library was
Co. Aytch. The book
was always a favorite of mine and whenever I re-read it I felt
that Sam Watkins was speaking directly to me and telling stories
by a warm fire. It was easy to feel a personal relationship
with him in view of his unique writing style as well as the warm
personality he expressed.
When
I ordered your edit of Co.
Aytch, I had no idea that it would arrive with your
personalized and thoughtful greeting. I thank you for your
efforts which warmly humanized the transaction. I also
particularly appreciated your reference to Proverbs 3:5-6.
Good advice
indeed and much needed by our country during these times.
May God bless
you and your family.

"To me, Co. Aytch is the quintessential memoir of the
Civil War. I have enjoyed it so much over the years. The book is so
well written that Sam's spirit comes alive and you feel like you really
know the guy." -Garret Ogata, US History teacher, Hawaii
Garret's students have been reading Co. Aytch, and made
comments. One of the students was surprised by the writing. She felt
that it was written by someone today and not in 1882. Another student
said "Don't tell anyone, but I like the book." "Needless to say I'm
having a great day teaching," Garret added. His classroom now has a
copy of Sam Watkins' photo hanging on the wall along with a photo of
General Robert E. Lee.
The
book arrived safely and I am enjoying it very much.
Especially liked seeing the photo of Jennie...and Sam in
his later years. ..."Co. Aytch" has long been
in my top 3 books list. (The others being the Bible and
Mildred Haun's "The Hawk's Done Gone".) I have
introduced it to many friends. What an incredible,
naturally eloquent storyteller was your
great-grandpa!! Thanks again..to him...and to you for
compiling this new edition. -Rachel, Franklin, TN
Of course I had read the original
Co. Aytch many times before, but your version brings to
life the real
Sam Watkins! Thank you for your wonderful work on a
masterful book. -Dan, Attorney at Law, Texas
There's a group of men that eat out on
Wednesdays. We call ourselves ROMEO --
Retired Old Men
Eating Out.
One of them asked me a few months ago it I liked
Civil War
books. I told him that I liked the ones that have a
human interest to them.
He loaned me an old paperback of this book. I hardly could
put it down. I've ordered
4: one for me, one for each of my kids so they get a more
insightful view of the Civil
War, and the 4th for the person that loaned me his old
paperback. I'm looking forward
to reading and re-reading the new edition. Thanks. -
